CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER

CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER
|
A two day trip to Weymouth with the weather forecast very changeable in the week leading up to it and we were actually wondering if it might even
be cancelled. Actually Saturday was fine and easily fishable even with the ten of us aboard included a couple of novice juniors and a couple with
previous upchucking form.
We started with a little sesion at anchore for some bream, and some very nice bream were caught, as well as a mix of other species including a couple
of goood bullhuss. When the tide was right we drifted for plaice and were notably successful.
When the drift became too fast we, and it seemed the rest of the Weymouth boats, repaired to a deeper mark to fish at anchor again.
It was a great day with 11 species turning up - about 40 bream (up to 3lb) a little conger eel, four bullhuss, a few mackerel, lots of pout and poorcod,
a rake of really nice plaice (2-4 lb), a couple of whiting, a red gurnard and a garfish.
Biggest fish was Peter Talbot's bullhuss (10lb 6oz) and Phil Evans and Roy Hebburn shared the honours for most species (7 each).
Back to our overnight accomodation at the Monarch Guest House in East Street (excellent
breakfast AND a good packed lunch is available if you ask Pat nicely in advance).
Sunday morning we were approached the boat a bit carefully due to the ice on the pontoon. There was also ice on the deck lockers but the boat
deck was clear (perhaps Aaron the crewman had hosed it away like he did for the pontoon ladder). The day was still though and the sea very much flatter
when we got out of the harbour.
First stop was to try for the early morning squid which most of us were not very good at. The exception was young Ben who somehow managed to get three
in rapid succession.
Then the day mainly followed the previous day's pattern, plaice when the tide was right for it and anchoring d when it wasn't.
Late afternoon found us back for the squid with a similar result to the morning (Ben got another two) although some of us actually dabbled for mini-species
instead of squid.
Another great day with a total of 11 species - Another couple of dozen bream, one bullhuss, a blenny, a few dogfish, half a dozen mackerel,
another load of plaice, poorcod and pout of course and one goldsinny wrasse.
Mick Doody and Roy Hebburn both found a 30lb conger to share the biggest fish points and Phil Evans had the most species (9).
Chris Caines got his camera out to record some of the fish and towards the end of the day got quite greative with a nice composition showing
Ivan Wellington's Topcat in the sunset (recognise the expensive reel in the foreground?)

Sun 11th November - Newhaven - Carrick Lee (Frank Shaw)
Originally this was booked as a cod and whiting trip, then when it looked as though there were only going to be 6 on the boat, it was changed to bass,
then we ended up with 8 of us after all. A vote was taken and it was decided that we would go with 8 and cope with any tangles without moaning,
so that was what we did.
We started off inshore to catch some bait (small whiting and pout) then headed out to some inshore wrecks
There were still a few bass about and although they were not exactly plentiful there were some nice ones. Two good ones were weighed at 5lb and 8lb
and a couple of big ones were lost, one of which was probably significantly larger (least said the better - Frank said it all).
Besides the bass we just had pout, whiting, mackerel, and a (tompot blenny while we wetre bait fishing).
The largest fish was a Farooq's 8lb bass and there was a 3-way tie for most species (Jim Grant, Farooq Shaah and Alan Whittaker).
Notably Farooq not only caught the largest bass but was the only one of us who managed to get four of them.

Sun 28th October - Newhaven - Carrick Lee (Frank Shaw) Secpnd boat was Ocean Pearl
The second boat competition onf the year.
The day started off with both boats plaice fishing and then, after a couple of hours, they went their separate ways for other species.
The largest fish was a 5.5lb cod for Alan Whittaker.
The competition winner ws Mick doody with 280 points.
The runner-up was Paul Davies (227 points). Gavin Thomson came in third with 212 points.

The same crew as the previous day but not quite such nice weather, colder and breezier but at least no rain.
Started off on the bream which was quite successful.
The next stop was back at the same plaice as the previous day and this time we perservered until we found a couple of blonde rays.
The day finished with us drifting for turbot and brill which produced several turbot.
The summary showed lots bream (over 30), dogfish, a few mackerel, four turbot, seversl whiting, one small conger, pout and five blonde rays
(up to 21lb).
Another good day.
Oliver Folarin had the biggest fish (21lb blonde) which really tested his light tackle and Mick was th only one to get seven species

Nine Guildford members and one guest aboard and the weather was lovely. Really quite warm still and dry for October
The first try was on a bank for rays with the "possiblity of other fish".
We found a couple of cod, several conger and a nice bullhuss but the rays did not appear so we went off to drift the mussels for plaice.
Plenty of nice fat plaice.
The last part of the day was at anchor for bream and whiting. Not many whiting (a bit early) but quite a few bream.
Totting up at the end of the day we found that between us we had caught eleven different species,a bass, bream (to nearly 3lb), a bullhuss
(9lb), two cod (6lb and 17lb), conger (up to 280lb), dogfish, red gurnard, fifty or more plaice (up to 3lb), poorcod, pout and whiting.
A great day out on Tiger Lily
Peter Thatcher had the biggest fish (28lb conger) and Jim Grant and Mick Doody shared the honour of most species (7 each)

Eleven anglers on board (10 members plus Rocky who had missed his boat by a couple of minutes).
A really nice day fishing out on the banks in the Nab Tower area. Coldish but not really windy and it was very pleasant when the sun was out
and it did not rain.
The targets were cod, whiting and bass. No cod but lots of whiting about and only one bass appeared but that was nearly six pounds.
Of course there were plenty of dogfish and pout and a couple of poorcod, a garfish, an immature snoothhound and a tiny small-eyed ray also
turned up.
The biggest fish was Mick Doody's bass and Jim Grant managed six species.

Weymouth Conger Festival
Five Guildford members fished this three-day competition aboard Tiger Lily.
The weather was not ideal but all the boats went out, they all managed to anchor (for most of each day) even though the cats had problems
with anchors pulling out.
There were The five of us Mick Doody, Chris Goddard, Jim Grant, Roy Hebburn and Peter Thatcher all managed to end up in the top half of the placings
Chis Goddard was the Tiger Lily boat winner and came a creditable ninth overall.
As well as conger a few ling turned up (up to 20 pounds) which were not as welcome as they would have been on another occasion.
Well it was a great three days and when the question was asked "are you up for it again next year" all five of us said "OF COURSE".
More information about the competition and conger fishing is available on the
Tiger Lily website.
If anybody is going down there we can also recommend "THE GLOBE INN" in East Street for a pint or three after a days fishing, its a "Proper Pub" -
NO live band, NOT trendy and has a "challenging" pool table in the back room.

Weymouth International Festival 24th to 28th Sept 2012
Phil Evans and Gavin Thomson.
Gavin and I fished this competition.
There were 90 entries in total.
We were not in the prizes but reasonably happy with our final positions for the week ending up in the top half of the table.
Gavin doing better than me to finish in the top 30.
We caught various fish mainly from inshore marks in very trying conditions due to the weather.
I added a bull huss to my species caught for the year and Gavin, garfish , sandeel, scad and cuckoo wrasse.

The long-range weather forecast was looking good for our week but as usual, as whenever we head for the Bristol Channel, the forecast (and the a
weather itself) got worse, winds increasing going round to the worst direction (West/Northwest).
To add a bit of interest Dave suggested that we have a little species competition each day under "ALY KAT" rules. The scheme is - the first fish
of each species gets gets you 25 points, the second and third get 10 points each and the fourth gets 35 points, each one after that only gets 2 points
(apart from mackerel which get you nothing after the fourth one)
Wednesday - Not too bad, apart the six o'clock start, but we certainly were not going to Lundy as we hoped and it RAINED, some of the time
like a tropical storm.
Six members and one guest (Gavin) aboard.
Over to the Welsh side and tried for rays inshore, went further out when the tide eased enough and then back inshore when it got too strong.
There were eighteen small-eyed rays and one blonde ray caught as well as a lot of dogfish, four turbot and four tope.
The competition winner was Mick Doody with 199 points, Biggest fish was also Mick with a 9lb small-eyed and Mick, Jim Grant and Roy Hebburn each
got three species.
On Thursday we were joined by Malcolm, one of the boats regular crew, so now we were eight.
This time we went off down the channel a little way looking for bass and bream and triggerfish but there were no bass to be found on the reef.
The triggers failed to appear and the only one bream turned up when we went inshore to the rough ground despite moving and re-anchoring numerous times.
We did find twelve species of fish even though most were very small.
There were blenny, bream, bull huss, dogfish, goby, mackerel, poorcod, pout, rockling, spotted ray, smoothhound and tope and it RAINED again
The competition winner was Roy Hebburn with 240 points, biggest fish was a tie between Roy Hebburn and Dai Richards who both got 20lb tope and Roy
also got a total of eight species.
On Friday we got up, looked at the weather, met at breakfast, had another look at the weather and phoned Dave to say we did not fancy it one
little bit.
Dave was happy to cancel and we had a day off doing other things. The weather DID get EVEN WORSE so it was a good call.
On Saturday Malcolm joined us again and at least the weather was a lot better with much less wind and no rain.
This time we concentrated mainly on the Porlock Bay area where the best of the fish were bull huss and the most numerous were dogfish.
We also got three conger, a few mackerel and pout, a tope and a poorcod.
The competition winner was Malcolm with 302 points, Biggest fish was a 5-way tie and Mick and Peter both had four species each.
Roy was not with us on the Sunday but his place was taken by Roland Thresher and Malcolm was replaced by Gordon (another guest angler).
We went up channel this time for more rays.
There was a bit of a swell driven by the wind but not too uncomfortable and the rain kept off so we had a great day with lots of fish.
We had 3 conger, 18 small-eyed rays, a thornback ray, a blonde ray, a bull huss, lots of dogfish, a couple of gurnards, 2 smoothhounda, and a whiting
Competition winner was Jim Grant with 284 points, The biggest fish was Peter Thatchers tope and Mick and Jim both had six species.
A good angling holiday with thanks to Dave Roberts for the fishing and Mel Freshwater at
The Old Ship Aground for the accomodation

Sat/Sun 8/9th September - Littlehampton - Jenifers Pride (Steve Edwards)
and Lynander (Dickie Legget)
GCSAC entered three two-man teams in the BCC affiliated clubs competition this year.
Over the two days our six club members caught 29 eels between them as well as seven other species, some deliberately (mackerel and pout for bait)
and some accidently (dogfish and a six pound bass).
Winners of the event were the "Superods B team" pairing of R.Kelly and R. Penston who fished out of their skins achieving 523 points.
But GCSAC was hardly disgraced -
"Guildford B" team (Jim Grant and Peter Thatcher) were runners up with 354 points.
"Guildford A" team (Roy Hebburn and Chris Goddard) came 3rd place with 332 points.
"Guildford C" team George Weller and Jason Weller were 4th with 322 points.
Roy Hebburn (who only stepped in as a substitute at the last minute) also won a tankard for catching the best eel of the weekend, namely
a 52lb fish.
While Jason Weller managed an eel of 42lbs which qualified him as a full member of the British Conger Club.
I reckon the "Catch of the day" was shared by Chris Goddard and Peter Thatcher who, between them, snagged Roy's line and then pulled it up from the deep
until the reel had been emptied of its 300 metres of braid allowing them to recover the £500.00 worth of rod and reel Roy had "thrown" into
the sea when he slipped on a bit of slime left by his 52lb eel (Roy may even get an award at the end of the year that).
The top boat was Dickie Legget's "Lynander" with 44 eels over the two days.
Next year the event will be fished out of Brixham on 28th and 29th September 2013 and as usual GCSAC will be there again.
more details about competitions and affiliating to the British Conger Club are on the BCC website.

Three club members (Chris, Jim and Roy) and one other novice angler (Leigh) went out on this lovely september day to catch a few mackerel
for bait in preparation for the BCC competition, have a bit fun and to introduce Leigh to the pleasures of sea angling.
We hit mackerel at the first try and soon had enough in the cool boxes to meet target one. Then we anchored between two bits of rough ground
where we found a few fish, but a pack tope found us, so after catching and releasing a few of them, we went off and anchored near a small wreck
where we stayed until nearly the end of the day. On the way back we tried for a few more mackerel without much success so we were glad that we
had got them earlier.
Well everybody enjoyed themselves - so target 2 reached.
Leigh caught six different species of fish and is considering coming with us again, so target 3 also achieved.
An excellent day with bream, dogfish, pout, a spotted ray, an undulate ray, lots of tope, lots of mackerel and a couple of scad caught.
Biggest fish was a a 14lb tope for Roy and most species anybody caught was six (Leigh and Jim).

This was the weekend of annual Tony Barnes Memorial Species Competition between GCSAC and the Barnes team.
Three of us (Mick, Roy and myself) went down a day early to have a practice day before the competition (Sneaky or what!). The first people we
bumped into on Thusday night were a couple of the Barnes who had been down for most of the week.
So - Friday the three of us joined 9 other individuals aboard Tiger Lily about 7:20. Aaron (crew) had the kettle on straight away and
Chris got busy organising carpark egget'stickets so that we could get away when the bridge opened up at 8:00.
The first target was plaice so we drifted the mussel beds (with great success) then it was an hour on the bank for turbot and brill and finally a
try inshore for some bream.
Saturday found us with five Guildford members against the the five strong Barnes team.
It was a species day, but we had to have a little go for the plaice again, as well as chasing all over the place to get species.
Again there were plenty of plaice and we actually found about fifteen other species with Mr Caines keeping a close count.
We had - bream, dogfish, garfish, red gurnard, mackerel, plaice (lots of really nice ones), pollack, poorcod, pout, one triggerfish, one turbot,
and wrasse(cuckoo,corkwing,launce, and goldsinny.
The final tally gave GCSAC as ahead on day 1.
Sunday and we started with a clean sheet to do it all again.
Chris mixed it up a bit and we stated on the muddy bit for red band fish.
After that it was more plaice (up to six lb) and fourteen other species
We had - bream, dogfish, red gurnard, launce, mackerel, plaice, pollack, poorcod, pout, one undulate ray, scad, lots of red band fish, and
wrasse(ballan,cuckoo,corkwing and goldsinny).
This time the Barnes were ahead but when the scores of the two days were added together they had not done quite enough so GCSAC retained the
trophy for another year.
The date for next year has already been set (31st August/ 1st September) and team tactics talks are already in progress.

A really full boat (12) for this club trip.
A bit of a bumpy ride out to start with then while the wind was against the tide we drifted for plaice. A session anchored for plaice once we found a
patch, a few more drifts and then it was off to the banks to try for the rays.
Plenty of plaice about, the biggest around 2lb, everybody got a few so there were probably about 40 or 50 caught.
The rays were less obliging and only three turned up, but there were a sprinkling of other species although only in ones and twos.
As well as the plaice and blonde rays (biggest 20lb), there were bream, mackerel, a smoothhound and a bass.
biggest fish was Gavin Thomson's 20lb blonde ray and most species was only three each for Nigel Cross and Gavin.

Sunday 12th August 2012 - Newhaven - Carrick Lee (Frank Shaw)
CAn early start at Newhaven for our 12hr conger trip.Weather was good with light winds. First stop was for mackerel and a lot of them were BIG
(about one and a half pounds) then onto our wreck.
After an hour in which the fishing was slow we re-anchored and started to catch decent conger, but the wind blew us off the wreck, so we fished
the rough ground but with no result. When the tide changed we anchored another wreck again with little success.
totting up the catch there were 16 conger eels (p to 58lb), mackerel, red and tub gurnards, scad, pout and pollack.
Biggest fish was the 58lb conger for Peter Talbot and the most species was 8 for Mick Doody.
[Report by Mick]

One of our suppliers invited us out on a day out with Glen targeting plaice with his little un putting worms on and taking fish off for the more
fainter hearted among us.
Plenty of plaice about, the biggest around 3lb interspersed with the odd bream and tub gunard.
We probably caught a hundred plaice by mid morning but kept 50 of the larger ones before deciding to go off and do something else.
Mackerel fishing for bait wasn't that brilliant but we had a few and did a bit of ray fishing.
I picked up a small eyed on squid and someone else a thornback on mackerel.
There were a few doggies about as usual and the odd tope, the biggest of which was around 15lb caught at the end of the day.
Nice warm days fishing with a slight breeze and plenty of cold drinks on ice in the coolbox when I should have been in work.
I know where I would have preferred to be.
I'm sure Mary Cairnes had her share of the plaice (fishing up the front with Glen), but in fairness she spent more time taking fish
off hooks for people and putting them in the coolbox (which took its toll at the end of the day).
Me, I had plaice and a small eyed ray.
[Report by Phil Evans]

Jack and myself went on a short notice bass and plaice trip on the banks off Selsey bill. Slow start to the bassing, a few in the 2-3lb range.
On the turn off the tide we anchored with the rest of the "fleet" on the sandbank and I immediatley connected with a
4lb Brill, my first ever, so big smile on my face.
Also caught by others were a 6lb turbot and another smaller brill. We then went drifting for Plaice which was more sucessfull
and we had about 20 good size fish.
Jack had 2 of these at about 2.5lb.--Lovely day for weather and throughly enjoyed the day.
Jack species count-Plaice, Waren species count-mackeral, scad,brill

2012 PCBA Species Hunt
Four CGSAC members took part in this event fishing as "Esher Rugby Club" . We did manage to just get into the prize list only six points behind the
winning team. Of the four the biggest contribution to the team score of 30 points (17 species) was Phil Evans , who had 12 species, and the smallest
was by Jim Grant who only managed a couple of dogfish and a miniscule pout.
Paul Davies had seven species and Gavin Thompson had eight. Between us we had mackerel, ballan wrasse, baillons wrasse, corkwing wrasse,
goldsinny wrasse, Cuckooo wrasse, dogfish, smoothhound, black bream, tope, pollack, pout, tompot blenny, smelt, tub gurnard, common goby and red gurnard.
Our biggest fish was a Phil's 8l.5lb smoothhound.

SIX OF US SPENDING THREE DAYS SHARKING OFF LUNDY FOR BLUES AND PORGIES - That was the plan.
What actually happened was slightly different - Five of us (Gavin,Roy, Jim, Phil and Mick fishing inshore close to Infracombe for three days.
The weather was absolutely atrocious.
Each day we went as far off shore as was comfortable (not very far). The worst day for rain was the Monday and the worst day for wind was Wednesday.
Tuesday we had a little shelter as ther was a little bit more South in the wind so we got out a little bit further.
Over the three days we still manage to catch a good variety of species - pollack, mackerel, dogfish, conger, grey gurnard, tub gurnard, smoothhound,
poorcod, Bass (up to 6lb), ballan wrasse, 3 bearded rockling, and plaice.
On the first day Roy Hebburn had the biggest fish (8lb smoothhound) Gavin Thompson, Jim Grant and Mick Doody each got six species.
On Tuesday it was Phil Evans who had the biggest fish ((8lb conger) and Mick got nine species.
The final day saw Mick take all the honours with a 7lb conger and six species.
As we had been pestered by dogfish all day, Dave Roberts organised a dogfish competition (with Aly Kat tackle prizes) in which Roy Hebburn not
only won the prize for the most dogfish but also cunningly boated the 30th dog to win the other prize.

Peter Thatcher and Mick Doody, at short notice, booked an individual trip to Cherbourg, wreck fishing.
The day satarted at 7am., a bit of wind but fishable. Mackerel was our first stop about 30 miles off, then another 15 miles to our first wreck.
First fish was a 4lb bass to Mick Doody followed by pollock every drift (slow start for Peter). Peter was soon into fish with a cod of 19lb. Mick
had a pollock of 15.5 lb and a few cod, lots of fish which had to be filleted and iced down.
Biggest fish was Mick's 20lb ling and
What a good meal at the Cafe de Paris in Cherbourg that evening.
SECOND DAY
Weather very windy. Difficuly to fish wreck - but we still had fish, a conger for Peter, ling and pollock for Mick.
The weather was getting worse so we decided to fish the oberfals for bass (about 18 miles from Hayling).
Mick managed another bass about 4lb.
We stopped at the Nab tower for mackerel to take home.
Very nice bunch of lads and good fishing first day.
[Report by Mick]

Jim Grant and Peter Thatcher joined three others on a "individuals' day on July 12th. We were hoping to go out a bit to one of the deeper wrecks but the
weather precluded that and so we visited the middle grounds. Managed a few mackerel on the way an some at anchor. First fish up was a spotted ray
about the size of a small dinner platee then there was a little tope and a couple of dogfish but then the pack tope started feeding in earnest and biting
through the traces so we moved out a bit to some rougher ground where "Suprize Suprise" the first fish was another tope. After a bit most of
us decided to get a few mackerel to take home. To finish off the day we visited a couple of wrecks on the way back and as the rain really started to
set in we headed for home.
Between us we caught a spotted ray lots of little tope, four nice pollack a load of mackerel, a few scad (bad sign, the scad arrive when the
mackerel are about to depart), some pout and of course the obligatory quota of dogfish.
All in all, very enjoyable day considering that the weather forecast was pretty dismal right up to the previous day.

Mick Doody, Peter Thatcher and Roy Hebburn joined the Jenifers Pride "singles' day on July 5 and enjoyed a productive day out in very unseasonal weather -
by this year's standards!
The sun shone all day and the wind didn't blow at all - contrary to forecast. Rays were the target and they didn't disappoint.
Peter Thatcher had the biggest Undulate of the day at 14lb 2oz plus a very nice Thornback.
Roy Hebburn managed to boat 3 Undulates, two of which were well over 13lb, plus a sizeable Thornback. He also 'stumbled' across a sizeable
Bass whilst Mick Doody picked up the only Smooth Hound of the day which was nudging double figures.
Bream and Mackerel were around in abundance and Peter also wheedled out a Cuckoo Wrasse.
All in all a very good day

This was to have been an extended wrecking trip starting out from Hayling, then fishing distant wrecks, staying 2 nights in Fecomp and having
another go at the French wrecks before heading back on the third day, stopping at another couple of wrecks on the way.
This was an excellent plan BUT
The weather forecast was too bad for Friday - so now it was a 2-day trip.
Then is was too bad for the weekend so Saturday was cancelled and Sunday changed from wrecking to inshore.
Then it was just too bad so Sunday was completely cancelled as well.

Club members Richard Warner, Janmie Robins and I,
setteth sail on a glorious day bound for some stretches of water east of IOW,
(one day before the longest day of the year).
Great day, mediocre fishing with millions of doggies and tens of thousands of small bream.
I had 5 species (including a poor cod)
but on the species scoreboard with bream, L.S.D.s, mackeral and a starry smoothhound was Richard Warner.
He also caught an 8.5lb lobster!!!!!!!!!!!!! See attached. I understand that lobsters are aphrodisiacs so
*******CENSORED BY WEBMASTER*******.
Top dog on the boat was Jamie Robins with the biggest Starry of day at about 6lb, and catching 6 species in all; bream, lsds, mackerel, pout
and poor cod.
Size of fish not great but nice to fish in your shorts and sandals for a change except when Warner's lobster arrived on deck, nipping at
your toots.

Saturday/Sunday 16/17th BCC Competition at Plymouth
The 4-man team entered was Peter Thatdher, Mick Doody, Chris Goddard, and Frank Weller. Jason Weller was also there but could not fish on the Sunday and at
the last minute Frank could not be there.
On the Saturday the weather was almost storm force and the fishing was cancelled (on Friday evening).
Saturday evening was the presentation of all the trophies for the previous year (2011).
Guidford won the trophy for the conger team event (Chanpionship at Brixham)- Chris, Mick and Jim.
Guidford also won the trophy for the Affilated Clubs event at Looe - Mick and Chris.
Mick also collected the trophy for "The Best Eel from a Reef" at 48lb and also best eel for October.
SUNDAY
Fishing was possible but with a big swell.
We fished a reef in the morning with no success then went on to a wreck. Lots of bits but no congers. Some spurs were caught , at this point the
anchor slipped and we had to re-position. Within 5 minutes all the Guildford team were into conger - Great!!;But then the anchor slipped again and that
was the end of the day's fishing!
Our boat had 6 eels in total and the Guildford membbers got one each.

5 club members joined a wrecking party aboard Valkyrie on June 14. Unfortunately the weather was closing in rapidly so the wise decision
to abandon our mid channel plans was taken on the morning and we opted for rough ground fishing 12 miles offshore. A huge shoal of
Mackerel was encountered at the Nab which provided enough bait for the day. A favourable tide made fishing in the stiff SE wind bearable.
Tope were prolific all day everyone catching at weights estimated up to 20lb. Robin Wightwick was the star of the day managing to catch
8 species including a very nice Undulate Ray of 14lb, a Bull Huss of 8lb and a very sizeable Common Smooth Hound. Two large ground
Pollack were taken the biggest of 14lb falling to Roy Hebburn. Sam Lane had a super Bass of 8lb4oz in addition to the other Pollack of 12lb.
A fantastic days fishing in trying conditions with everyone catching well throughout the day including some nice Bream up to 2lb.
Most species went to Robin. The heaviest weighed fish were the Undulate and Pollack, both at 14lb.
But whilst none of the numerous Tope were weighed, they were all of a size between 10lb and 20lb. By consensus, Alan had the biggest.

Third time for the twice cancelled club competition. We finally got out even if not typical June weather. Cold, overcast a stiffish breze later on
and a bit of drizzle.
The two boats started the day anchored a few hundred yards apart but after a coule of hours Jenifers Pride went off chasing the fish while
Margaret-Elaine remained put for the rest of the day, which in this instance paid off.
It was a species based competition and all the first four places managed to get 7 or 8 species and the full 10 Bream each.
The winner was Roy Hebburn (M-E) with 216 poinst, second Phil Jim Grant (M-E) with 200 points, third Phil Evans (M-E) with 197 points just
pushing Mick Doody (JP), with 185 points out of the prize list. Chris Anscombe took the prize for the biggest fish with a 12lb 12oz Undulate Ray.

Monday 4th June 2012 - Southsea - Wight Huntress (Glenn Milligan)
Gavin Thomson, Jamie Robins and I had an inshore trip out of Southsea on Glen Milligan's White Huntress with a stiff, overcast North Easterly.
Much sliding around in the morning until the winds dropped in the afternoon.
In all there were 9 different species caught.
Plenty of bream, smallish smoothhounds and ballan wrasse. Biggest bream probably two or two and a half pounds.
Biggest smoothhound about 6 or 7lb.None were weighed. Plenty of pouting ,poor cod ,LSDs, very few mackerel, a spotted ray and a Bailons wrasse for me.
Between us 9 different species in all.

Wednesday 30th May 2012 - Newhaven - Carrick Lee (Frank Shaw)
Two of us this time Roy Hebburn and myself. 12hr disciples wrecking trip.
I am not going to tell you where we went or what we used but we found the target species and caught some. Cod for the table and conger for fun
Everybody took home a couple of cod and we had eels up to 65lb as well as a few nice pollack (6 - 8 lb), a tub gurnard of nearly 4lb as
well as the usual pout and in among the mackerel we caught for bait, a couple of herring and some whiting appeared.
Our biggest was my 65lb conger and Roy had one more specie than me with 6.

Monnday 28th May 2012 - Newhaven - Carrick Lee (Frank Shaw)
Just two of us, Chris Goddard and I booked for an individuals trip, hoping for wrecking.
Unfortunately the latest forecast gave a strong westerly for the afternoon so a change of plan. Off to the west, right down to the Kingmere.
So instead of going out from Littlehampton and fishing near Newhaven for plaice like we did earlier in the year, we went out from Newhaven
and fished for Bream.
Then in the afternoon we came back (wind behind us) to drift off of Shoreham and Brighton for plaice.
A good variety of fish on the boat, Bream up to about 3lb, some nice plaice, a lot of small dabs and a couple of large ones, There were also a
few ballan wrasse and a red gurnard as well as dogfish and plenty of pout.
Our biggest was my bream and most species (4) was a tie.
[Report by Jim]
|
Just Jim and Nigel as individuals this time. At last its summer. Hats and suncream instad of survival suits and the bream were feeding.
lots of fish about, Bream to 3lb ish, a nice bass and a double figure smoothhound also came aboard as well as beautiful cuckoo wrasse, ballan wrasse
dogfish, pout, mackerel (nice to see a few of them), and garfish.
We two managed to get a good share of the bream and some of the other species.
Our biggest fish was judged a tie as we did not weigh the bream and several very large spawning females were returned.
I managed six species. An excellent day.

"Jason and George go fishing for flatties"
Aboard Ocean Warrior , we headed off to fish off Shoreham, drifting. As this was quiet we headed down to the pipe off Newhaven,
where fishing was much better.
I caught a tub gurnard eight plaice and 7 dabs while Geoorge caught 3 plaice and 4 dabs.
[Report by Jason]
Jason threfore got most species and as no biggest fish recorded the point for that were shared (Result George 2 points abd Jason 4).

"Jason goes fishing with friends"
We headed out 18 miles to drift the wreck of "The Lord Stamp", The weather was dry with a gentle 3 to 4 breeze from the east3.
I had a good day , 3 pollack, 2 cod, and some mackerel, my largest fish was a cod of about 10lb.
[Report by Jason]
|
Just Jim and Mick on this individuals day. Wind was cold had a lot of East and that never improves the fishing.
The bream were "picky" and not much else about.
The two of us did manage to get a few bream though (most were small females that went back) and Mick started off well with a bass of over three pounds
and later had a snoothhound of about six. There were also a couple of ballan wrasse and a corkwing.
Our biggest fish was my Mick's smoothhound and he also got the most species (5)
[Report by Jim]
|
A stop at the Nab Tower for mackerel produced NOTHING, so straight out to the deep water where we fished the end of the ebb and the beginning
of the flood before moving inshore to shallower water when the tide started getting a bit too much.
A great variety of fish but not many of anything. There were eleven species, about a dozen bream and dogfish, one 14lb conger, a few pout,
a couple of poorcod, one small spotted ray and one undulate, two common smoothhounds, over ten starry smoothhounds and four tope.
Biggest Fish was my 14lb 13oz Tope and I also shared the most species(6) with Mick Doody.

Sunday 6th May 2012 - Newhaven - Carrick Lee (Frank Shaw)
Again the strong offshore wind meant plaice fishing again.
We went west down the coast , well past Brighton and then worked our way bak toward Newhaven doing a different drift each time.
Lots of plaice (biggest 3lb 3oz), lots of little whiting, some tiny tub gurnards, and a few mackerel and pout.
Biggest Fish was Peter Talbot's plaice and most species was shared between him and Andrew Ackland (5).
[Report by Jim]
|
Three Club members went on this individuals day and it was well worth it. The bream were larger than the previous day and more plentiful.
One of the other regular Thursday individuals found a bas of about six pounds but apart from the bream we only had dogfish, poorcod, pout ,
a cuckkoo wrasse and a garfish.
We did have a surprise visitor though, who broke his journey stayed for nearly an hour to inspect our bait and our fishing tackle.
You don't see many of these at sea or even on land.
Between the three of us the biggest fish was my Bream (3lb 3.5oz) and Roy Hebburn had the most species (4)
[Report by Jim]
|
Four Club members persuaded Steve to take us out for Bream and Bass. We had a great day even though the Bream were difficult.
There were only about a dozen sizeable bream caught, four bass, a few pout, a couple of dogfish and three garfish made up the total for the day.
A good day though (how often is a fishing day a bad day?).
Biggest fish was Mick Doody's Bream and his Bass (both about two and a half pounds) snd there was a three way tie for most species (3 each)

Club competition CANCELLED DUE TO BAD WEATHER
|
Sunday 15th April 2012 - Newhaven - Carrick Lee (Frank Shaw)
This was to have been an offshore attempt at anchoring a deep-water wreck for BIG cod, plenty of bait all arranged, early start and all that BUT the weather
gods had other ideas.
A strong offshore wind meant that we could still go fishing but only inshore for plaice. Frank gave us the choice, plaice or cancel.
We, of course, opted for plaice.
We drifted the blue water, on each drift allowing the wind to push us out until the boat started to get less comfortable.
We did get about a hundred plaice and dabs but nothing huge and many were returned to grow on. A couple of mackerel also turned up, the first
we have seen this year, but its a start. The tiny whiting were also about stealing the baits with only the occasional unlucky one being hooked. There were also a couple of
tub gurnards.
Biggest Fish was my tub gurnard of about three pounds and Chris Goddard had the most species (5).

Wednesday 4th April 2012 - Newhaven - Carrick Lee (Frank Shaw)
Mick and Jim go plaice fishing. This was planned as one of Frank's invitational mid-week 12-hour wrecking trips the really keen anglers but due
to sickness and weather it was converted to a normal length day out drifting for plaice.
Not far offshore, sheltered by the land, it was very pleasant if a bit chilly at times (Jacket on, Jacket off, Jacket on again...). Loads of plaice
and quite a few dabs but varied from smallish to tiny. Thonly other speies were very small whiting and a couple of pout.
Biggest Fish a plaice for Mick, most species (4) for Jim.
[Report by Jim]

Eight club members were joined by Len Miles, one of the Hayling regulars. Out to a bank where the first drop producrd a great 25lb blonde ray
for Len. That was quickly followed by another one of about 15lb for Simon THEN THEY STOPPED FEEDING. There were plenty of dogfish about and a few
smothhounds but the fish of the day was a 31lb tope for Chris Goddard. The day can be summed up as beautiful weather with the fish more notable for
quality rather than quantity. There were only the two blondes, only the one tope, plenty of dogs, half a dozen smoothhounds, a pout and a couple of whiting.
Biggest fish was Chris Goddards 31lb tope and the most species (4) went to Jim Grant.
[Report by Jim]
|
Mick Doody and Jim Grant went plaice fishing with Steve, chilly start but it just got better with a very calm and sunny day. There were lots of
plaice about and we caught about 60 on the boat but most went back as they were very small although one weighed in at 2lb 4oz.
The only other fish on the boat were a few small dabs.
Of the two of us I had the biggest one (about 20oz) while mick had a couple of
dabs making him the only one of us with more than one specie.
[Report by Jim]
|
Seven club members aboard on a lovely calm and sunny day. The fishing was very slow to start with but eventually we managed to attract a couple of
blondes. In the end it was all a bit disappointing on the fish front, the total being four dogfish and four blonde rays with anothe big blonde being
lost close to the boat in the strong tide.
Biggest fish was Chris Goddard 19lb blonde ray and the most species was shared (only one each for six of us).
[Report by Jim]
|
Mick Doody and Jim Grant went spurdog fishing with Steve, a lovely day but no spurdog (same as last year), perhaps we wont bother next year.
We did catch conger, one each, a couple of pout and one dofish between us.
Mick's 20lb conger was the biggest fish and Jim had 3 species to Mick's 2.
[Report by Jim]

I got an email on the 7th march from Steve as he was arranging a short notice trip to the Shambles for
an early season Turbot-given the weather myself and Jack didn't need to be asked twice.
The first few drifts were on the flood which produced 2 plaice (approx 4lb each) and 1 Brill-about 3lb then it went quite for a bit.
The Turbot started to feed just before slack and a few small ones came aboard and were put back. During the quiet preiod Steve and his deck hand,
Tony started to feather up Launce and at the start of the Ebb the Turbot were being caught at steady pace.
In total the boat had 22 Turbot, 2 of them weighing over 9lb.
Jack-2 Turbot biggest 3lb and Warren 4 Turbot biggest 6lb.
[Report by Warren]
|
Peter Thatched and Mick Doody went plaice fishing with Steve, a lovely day with a total of 26 plaice on the boat, all very plump for the time of year.
Mick had plaice, dogfish and whiting and Peter just had plaice. The biggest fish was tied with a plaice of about 1lb 4oz each.

Sunday 4th March 2012 - Newhaven - Carrick Lee (Frank Shaw)
CANCELLED due to the weather
|
An "individuals" day with just two club members aboard. Lovely calm and sunny sunny day with very little wind. Plaice were the target so an hour
or so to the east before we started a series of drifts. Fish came in quite steadily but it slowed down a bit later when the tide got stronger.
All in all reasonably successful with about forty plaice and one dab caught. Some were very small and got released but everyone had at least a couple
to take home.
The biggest fish was my 2lb 6oz plaice. Roy and I both got just the one specie (plaice of course!).

Saturday 25th February 2012 - Shoreham - Blue Fin (Mark Vale)
My self and Jack when for a peaceful day drifting for Plaice. The sea was calm and the weather was perfect. It may have been a bit early for
the plaice however there were masses of whiting caught, mostly undersized which were returned. The skipper moved us around to several different marks
looking for the Plaice and we finally caught some later in the day. 10 Plaice on the boat between 1lb & 2lb.
The biggest fell to myself at 2lb. All in all a lovely days fishing.
Species count-Jack Slatter- plaice and whiting,
Warren Slatter - plaice, whiting and a pouting

Tuesday 4th February 2012 - CLUB MEETING
It is the time of year that we get cold weather wind and poor inshore fishing and lots of skippers take their boats out of the water and go away on
their holidays. It is also the time when GCSAC present their annual trophies to the successful anglers.
This year we were lucky enough to have Glenn Cairns on hand to help with the presentations. He brought along his charming wife Jackie and his two
youngest children. Buddy Cairns as a junior member was there to collect his trophies and Mary Cairns kindly agreed to be the official photographer.
So as soon as the minutes of the previous meeting had been read we got straight on with the presentations. Then it was the trophies for the
the individual species.
First up was Chris Anscombe to collect a certificate for winning the annual flounder competition which he had won decisively by landing the only flounder of the
competition. There is a bottle of whisky involved but that was handed over on the day.
Buddy collected both the "Farooq Shah" trophy for his 12lb 2 oz Bass (12lb 4 oz) and the "Dick Follet Flatfish" trophy for his 8lb 15ozturbot.
I am pictured presenting one of the trophies while dad Glenn (on the right) looks on proudly.
Our conger club tankard was presented by Bob Nye (BCC Festival
Officer) to Chris Goddard (the one holding it). As an affiliated club the BCC we are given a tankard every year and it goes to the most notable conger angler of the year.
I (Jim Grant) got the "Fish Recorders Shield" for a 4lb Black Bream but as I am in a lot of the pictures so you don't need to see me again.
Dave Ball won the cup for the Treasurers (Ray) cup for his 177lb skate but was not present on the night.
Linda Talmadge was there to receive the "Blue Merlin" cup smoothhound cup (12lb 2oz) but somehow avoided the camera.
Another one who was missing on the night was Warren Slatter who won the Mick Doody cup for his magnificent 30lb 4oz cod.
Nigel Cross pictured with me and Glenn won the "Tiger Lily" pollack cup (15lb))
and Glenn presented Paul Harcus with the "MFV Solent Angler" Wrasse Shield for his 3lb 4 oz Ballan.
The enormous "Jenifers Pride" Tope tankard was shared between Mick Doody and Peter Thatcher who each caught a 35lb tope.
Then it was on to the more non-species specific awards. There were Notable Specimen Certificates for Buddy Cairns,
Chris Goddard, Warren Slatter, Linda Talmadge and Mick Doody. The "Jenifers Pride" trophy for the best Littlehampton specimen went to yours truly
for my 4lb Bream.
The "World Cup" for the biggest fish from outside British waters was won by Dave Ball for his 125lb striped marlin and Dave's skate was also took the
"Watneys Southern" Shield for the best specimen from a boat as well as Bunters shield for the heaviest fish from a boat.
Bunters trophy for the heaviest
fish from the beach and the Beach Specimen cup were both taken by Simon Harding with his 9lb 12oz smoothhound which seems to be a bit of a surprise to him.
Them we got to the species hunt and the competition awards.
The Beach Species Hunt shield was taken by Chris Anscombe with 14. The MFV Solent Angler Boat Species Hunt shield was shared between Mick Doody and
Roy Hebburn with 34 species each and Mick Doody also collected the "Jenifers Pride" Competition Species" cup as well as the Boat Competition Cup.
Last year, for the first time the Dick Follet Perseverance Trophy was not presented as no one was deemed worthy BUT this year there
were two first. It was the first time the trophy had been shared been shared and first time it has had a skippers name on it. The names this year are
Mick Doody, Chris Caines and Glenn Cairns. Unfortunately Chris was on holiday but Glenn has promised to pass it on to him later in the year so that
he can display it for a while in his trophy cabinet.
Then it was champions time.
A "Top Junior Angler" Certificate for Buddy.
The Guildford Angling Centre Beach Angler of the Year cup was presented to Simon Harding together with a fishing reel generously donated
by Glenn.
Roy Hebburn received the Surrey Daily Advertiser cup for Boat Angler of the Year together with a fishing reel
also donated by Glenn.
Finally Roy was also presented with the Presidents Cup as 2011 Best Angler Overall (Boat and Beach).
Then back too to normal club business.
The Treasurer reported a healthy balance but warned that although it looked as though we were very well off the total included deposits against
future boat trips.
< br/>The Beach report was very short as not much had happened. It has been a bit too cold to stand around on a beach.
The Boat report covered the two trips so far this year (see below).
The Boat secretary offered the unallocated places from previous meetings and then we took turns to select our boat places for May.
We ended with very few unfilled spaces on the boats (see Calendar ).
I was up next as Fish Recorder and Publicity - Not done anything since last meeting.
The draw for the "free" boat place (well £20 towards the cost anyway) and then an excellent raffle organised by Linda who did attempt an impression
of Jim Henley. Jim unfortunately was at home recovering from a heart attack but hopes to be back and raffling next month.
We finished off with "Any other Business"
John wanted to know why we were called "Guildford CITY Sea Angling Club" although when Guildford is not a "City". Roy explained that it is because
we meet in the City Club which started life as the Guildford City Supporters Club when they had their own ground at Josephs Road.
Mick and Roy reminded those booked for the "away trips" that advance partial (or full) payments for these do ease the shock later on.
The Final event was an excellent light buffet which Linda provided. Thank you Linda.

Saturday 4th February 2012 - Newhaven - Carrick Lee (Frank Shaw)
This was probably the coldest day that the club has gone fishing. It was really freezing, temperatures down to minus 9 degrees centigrade on the
way down. Of copurse it was much warmer in Newhavenat a balmy minus 2. It disd get warmer during the day , it may even have got above zero.
Anyway at least the fishing was good. We went out over 25 miles to one of the easterly wrecks and drifted it all day with lures(the choice
of which was critical). Everybody got at least one decent cod to take home and there were four big ones (up to 26lb). Higher in the water we hit a
few pollack (biggest 14lb) and as usual the pout occasionaly took the lures as did one opimistic whiting which was not a lot longer than the lures some of
us were using.
Biggest fish was my 26lb cod and Mick's whiting was his fourth species of the day.

Monday 2nd January 2012 - Newhaven - Carrick Lee (Frank Shaw)
Frank emailed Peter to let him know that he was going out and there were spaces and before he knew it, four of us had booked ourselves on the trip.
There is now more space to sit and put tackle boxes on the engine cover so the boat is a bit more comfortable. Plenty of hot drinks to keep us
going so we had a great time. The cod hadn't arrived in numbers but we managed to bag a couple and also a few pollack.
Pout were also taking the sidewinders and a couple of gurnard and a whiting also came aboard.
Biggest fish was a Mick Doody's 14lb cod and he also shared the most species (three) with me.
